Ghana's economic growth has been accompanied by a commitment to improving labour conditions and social policy, particularly in enterprises. The Tripartite Declaration of Principles concerning Multinational Enterprises and Social Policy (MNE Declaration) has guided efforts to promote responsible business practices across the country.

The MNE Declaration provides a framework that encourages fair labour practices, decent work, and corporate social responsibility; and the Trade for Decent Work Project supports enterprises to integrate these principles into their operations. A notable example of this is the Ghana Oil Palm Development Company (GOPDC), which employs around 3,000 workers during peak seasons.

Previously, the company's approach to worker welfare was more top-down. However, through engagement with the project, GOPDC has now embraced a more inclusive approach to dialogue between the management and workers. As a result, GOPDC has implemented more effective policies that enhance worker safety.

"We are all equipped with PPE to ensure our safety at work," says George Opoku Adjei, a Workers Leader at GOPDC. "These measures are greatly appreciated, and we are optimistic about continuous improvements," Adjei adds.

There is now a collective bargaining agreement between the workers and the management, and the company has also established regular meetings that foster open communication and effective resolution of concerns.

"Whenever issues arise, we address them collectively, "explains Andrew Andoh Anyam, Community Relations Manager at GOPDC, adding that committees have been established at different levels for resolving any disputes that may arise.

The project has contributed to strengthening the relationship between employers and workers, creating a more cooperative work environment. The implementation of the MNE Declaration principles supports Ghana's efforts to create fair, just, and sustainable working conditions for all stakeholders.

While these advancements have created a foundation for a better working environment, the journey is far from over. Continued dedication to responsible business practices, ongoing worker engagement, and stronger partnerships between stakeholders will be key to ensuring that every worker in Ghana enjoys the dignity, safety, and fairness they deserve.
